Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Improv, Pointe and Choreography

(Choreography:  the students will learn an entire piece over the course of the week)

Receive more than a month’s worth of technique in a week, with a special performance for the parents on Friday at 4:30pm.

Students will be divided into 3 levels – *sample schedule*

Instructors

Guest Ballet Teacher/Choreographer: Robert Poe is a native of South Carolina and received his formal training at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities where his teachers were former members of Merce Cunningham Dance Company and New York City Ballet among other companies.  He has danced soloist and featured roles with Columbia City Ballet, Cedar Lake II, Nashville Ballet, Missouri Ballet Theatre, and is currently an artist with the Big Muddy Dance Company. Robert also serves as the Ballet Master of Dance Arts in St. Louis.

Guest Jazz Teacher/Choreographer: Kelsey Bartman began formal training with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School(PBTS) and Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts(CAPA). Summers were spent studying at American Ballet Theatre, New York, Jacob’s Pillow Jazz Program for two years and PBTS for several years. Kelsey then continued as a trainee with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, joined Nashville Ballet 2 in 2007, and was hired as a Nashville Ballet Apprentice. She is a co-creator of Works in Progress(WIP) Choreography Project, and has choreographed for Nashville Ballet, Nashville Ballet 2, Columbus Modern Dance, Exhalations Dance Theatre, Arova Contemporary Ballet, and Texture Contemporary Ballet. Kelsey is now Associate Artistic
Director, Resident Choreographer, and Dancer for Texture Contemporary Ballet.

Guest Modern Teacher/Choreography: Alyssa Watson will be graduating from SIUE with a BA in
dance and will be joining The Big Muddy Dance Company as a trainee next season. Since 2018, she
has enjoyed the opportunity to choreograph and teach for Fusion Dance Center in Greenville and Vandalia Performing Arts Center. Her senior choreographic work was picked to be presented at the regional ACDA on behalf of SIUE, which is a great honor.

Guest Improv teacher – Ben Mielke – received his BFA in Modern Dance from University of Illinois and his MFA in Modern Dance from University of Utah with a certification in Screen Dance (dance for camera).  From 2005-14 he served as technical director, aerial rigger, and featured performer with Robert Wood Dance New York. Ben has also served as our resident Drosselmeyer in our Nutcrackers in recent years, as well as offered his expertise in all things partnering and pas de deux. 

Pointe/Choreography:  Elizabeth Conway – SSDC and DanceStation director – attained her BFA in Dance Performance from Webster University and is a Diploma Fellow of the CCA. She is also the former Dance Minor director of McKendree University and McKendree Dance Ensemble.
